choosing the perfect water feature for your space
WHEN IT COMES TO ELEVATING YOUR GARDEN, FEW CHOICES ARE AS ENDURING, AS ELEMENTAL, OR AS BREATHTAKING AS A NATURAL STONE WATER FEATURE. BUT WITH GRANITE, LIMESTONE, SLATE AND SANDSTONE ALL VYING FOR ATTENTION — HOW DO YOU CHOOSE WHAT'S RIGHT FOR YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE?
At Outdoor Living UK, we’ve spent over 25 years helping UK gardeners find their perfect water feature. In this guide, we’ll take you through everything you need to know about natural stone — from the geological differences between stone types to installation, care, and why the investment pays for itself many times over. Whether you have a compact courtyard or a rolling country garden, a natural stone water feature will be one of the most rewarding additions you ever make.
UNDERSTANDING NATURAL STONE — WHY IT'S UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE
Natural stone water features are carved or shaped from genuine quarried rock — granite, limestone, slate, or sandstone — rather than cast from resin, fibreglass, or GRC (glass-reinforced concrete). This seemingly simple distinction has profound implications for how your feature looks, feels, and performs across the decades.
Real stone carries the memory of the earth — veins of mineral, subtle shifts in tone, textures formed over millions of years. No two natural stone features are identical. When light catches the surface of a granite sphere or water sheets across a limestone trough, the effect is qualitatively different from anything synthetic. Here’s why natural stone stands apart:
- Genuine mineral character:Natural stone has depth, variation, and texture that synthetic materials cannot replicate, no matter how refined the mould.
- Improving with age:Rather than fading or yellowing, natural stone develops a patina over time — mosses, mineral staining, and weathering that garden designers actively seek out.
- Exceptional longevity:A well-maintained granite water feature can last 30, 40, 50 years or more. The upfront investment is genuinely the last time you’ll buy a water feature.
- Heavyweight stability:Natural stone’s significant mass means features stay firmly planted in even the most exposed UK gardens — no risk of being toppled by wind.
- Ecological credentials:Stone is a naturally occurring, non-synthetic material. No polymers, no resins — fully recyclable at end of life and lower embodied carbon than manufactured alternatives.
GRANITE, LIMESTONE, SLATE & SANDSTONE — CHOOSING YOUR STONE
The four main natural stones used in garden water features each have distinct personalities. The right choice depends on your garden style, local climate exposure, and how much maintenance you’re willing to carry out — particularly through UK winters.
- Granite — The Gold Standard:An igneous rock formed from cooled magma, granite is exceptionally hard with very low porosity. It is naturally frost-resistant, requires virtually no sealing, and suits modern, minimal, and Japanese-inspired garden styles. Available in grey, black, pink, and white speckled tones. Best for: year-round UK outdoor use with minimal maintenance.
- Slate — The Dramatic Contemporary:A metamorphic rock prized for its layered texture and deep charcoal and blue-grey tones. Highly water-resistant and ideal for contemporary and oriental garden designs. Slate can occasionally flake along natural grain lines if subjected to repeated freeze-thaw cycles, so draining in winter is advisable. Best for: modern, architectural, and oriental garden styles.
- Limestone — The Timeless Classicist:A sedimentary rock that weathers beautifully, developing the mossy, aged character beloved in English cottage and country gardens. Limestone is softer and more porous than granite — it must be drained before winter and sealed annually. The trade-off is a warmth and romance that harder stones simply don’t offer. Best for: traditional, cottage, and informal garden styles.
- Sandstone — The Warmest Palette:The most affordable of the natural stones, ranging from honey-buff to deep terracotta. Sandstone is the most porous and softest option, requiring the most diligent care — full draining before winter and regular resealing are essential. But its warm, earthy tones in sunlight are genuinely stunning. Best for: Mediterranean, rustic, and informal garden styles
For most UK gardeners exposed to real winters, granite is our expert recommendation — it combines the lowest maintenance burden with the longest lifespan. However, if you’re drawn to the warmth of limestone or the romance of sandstone, these remain outstanding choices provided you follow the seasonal care guidelines.

INSTALLATION & PLACEMENT — GETTING IT RIGHT FIRST TIME
Natural stone water features are heavier than synthetic alternatives — sometimes significantly so. A 50cm granite sphere can weigh over 100kg. Getting installation right from the outset protects both your feature and your garden, and means years of trouble-free enjoyment. Here’s how to approach it:
- Prepare a solid, level base:Natural stone must sit on paving slabs, a concrete pad, or compacted hardcore topped with flags. Never place directly on lawn or soft soil, which will settle unevenly under the weight. A perfectly level base ensures even water flow and prevents the feature from tilting over time.
- Position the reservoir first:Most self-contained natural stone features include a reservoir tank below the feature. Set this precisely level before placing the stone — uneven reservoirs cause water to overflow on one side and drain the pump dry.
- Enlist help for heavy pieces:Never attempt to move a large granite or limestone feature alone. Two people, a sack trolley, and patience are far preferable to a strained back or a cracked feature.
- Route electrics safely:All outdoor electrical connections must comply with UK Part P regulations. Use a qualified electrician for any new outdoor circuits. The pump cable should be routed through conduit and connected via a weatherproof outdoor socket with RCD protection.
- Seal before first use (limestone/sandstone):Apply a coat of stone sealer to limestone and sandstone features before filling with water. This prevents mineral staining and dramatically reduces water absorption, making frost protection far easier.
- Add water treatment from day one:Fill with clean water and add a water feature treatment product before switching on the pump. Starting clean dramatically reduces algae establishment and keeps maintenance easier throughout the season.
YEAR-ROUND CARE — KEEPING YOUR STONE FEATURE BEAUTIFUL
The care routine for a natural stone water feature is straightforward once established — and far less demanding than most gardeners expect. The key moments are seasonal: getting the feature running cleanly in spring and properly protected in autumn.
- Weekly in summer:Top up water levels lost to evaporation, especially during warm spells. A pump running low on water will overheat and fail — this is the most common cause of pump damage.
- Monthly:Remove and rinse the pump filter sponge under clean water. A blocked filter strains the pump motor and reduces flow rate. Clean gently — never squeeze dry or use harsh chemicals on the sponge.
- Every 2–3 months:Add a water feature algae treatment to the reservoir. Products specifically formulated for water features are safe for visiting wildlife — birds, hedgehogs, and insects that drink from your feature.
- Twice yearly — full clean:Drain the reservoir, remove the pump, and clean all surfaces with a soft brush and pH-neutral stone-safe cleaner diluted in water. Never use vinegar, bleach, or acidic cleaners — these permanently etch stone, especially limestone and sandstone.
- Autumn — winterisation (critical):Before the first UK frost (typically October–November), drain the reservoir completely, remove the pump, and store it submerged in a bucket of clean water indoors. Cover limestone and sandstone features with a breathable frost-protection cover or move smaller pieces to a frost-free shed. Granite and hard slate can typically remain in place once drained.
- Annual resealing:Re-apply stone sealer to limestone and sandstone each spring as part of your restart routine. This single step dramatically extends the feature’s life and keeps its appearance sharp.
